Facebook sets new rules on which ad networks apps may use

Facebook sets new rules on which ad networks apps may use Facebook is taking a much more serious stance over which ad networks developers may use to monetize their applications. Use a network the social network doesn’t like and you face being banned.

According to All Facebook, Facebook posted an update to its app developers wiki last night, and the popular social network made it very clear as to which ad networks were approved for app developers to work with, and which were definitely to be avoided.

The page for the banned networks makes no bones about the situation:

There are many ways to monetize your application and many providers to help you along the way. However, this page comprises a set of monetization providers that have been banned by Facebook from operating on Facebook Platform and Facebook.com. As a developer, please make sure you adhere to all Platform Policies including the Advertising Guidelines and refrain from using any monetization provider listed here.

  • Social Hour
  • SocialReach
  • Tatto Media

If a developer should choose to work with one of these banned ad networks, they are running the risk of their app being banned from Facebook.

Just because an ad network isn’t currently on the list doesn’t mean it won’t be there eventually.  Apparently Facebook is increasing the size of its enforcement team to continually monitor ad networks for any advertisements the company may find to be unethical or deceptive.  While the current warning seems to be directed more at the actual developers, it is clear that the ad networks have also been put on notice.

Considering the current atmosphere in the blogosphere towards what has been labeled as deceptive advertising practices by the apps that offer “incentives” to complete deals, this isn’t terribly surprising that Facebook has stepped in.  If it will actually clean up the space is another question.
