Android phones get an app store for porn
Ever wish you could have pornography on your phone? Well, there’s an app for that … if your phone happens to be running Google’s Android system.
While Apple has famously been keeping anything close to pornography off of the iPhone and iPod Touch via its app approval process, Android’s ability to download apps from anywhere has left this door wide open.
MiKandi.com is a new startup that has launched a third-party app store for the Android OS that works completely independently of the official Android Marketplace. A user simply needs to point their browser to the company’s Web site, download the store, and from there they are off to the races. Developers will be able to build racy apps to be sold via the store, and with no corporate oversight, the sky is really the limit on what can be marketed.
For now the store only has one app named Dildroid which will control the intensity with which your phone vibrates. Considering the age of the store, this isn’t surprising, and one can easily imagine that it will quickly fill up over the coming weeks as developers revel in the freedom this new store provides them with.
JAson Perlow’s Tech Broiler column on ZDNet raises some excellent points about how, love it or hate it, pornography has played a huge part in driving technology adoption over the years. From VHS, to DVDs and streaming media, the masses have followed to the technologies chosen by the porn industry. Will this necessarily mean the iPhone is now doomed? Highly doubtful, but if this store, or ones like it, takes off, don’t be too surprised if you hear about Android’s market share suddenly increasing.
