The King of Pop rules Yahoo Search in ‘09
Yahoo released its top 10 search queries for 2009, crowning Michael Jackson with the number one spot in the wake of his untimely death. Jackson also shared the top 10 with other celebrities both old and new.
The second most popular search term for 2009 according to Yahoo is Twilight, a vampire-based runaway hit book and movie series that’s popular with tweens. WWE came in as the number 3 most popular search term with Yahoo searchers.
Also making the list are new Hollywood star Megan Fox and standby search star Britney Spears, whose antics made her the most searched for on Yahoo last year. Also making the list are Naruto, a Japanese Manga series and the American Idol television series.
It’s interesting that the WWE and NASCAR made the top 10, beating out every other manner of sport on television. These search terms are contrasted by the appearance of Japanese animation and the RuneScape online role-playing game.

Social media types may notice that Twitter didn’t make the cut on Yahoo, though the site seemed to capture the public’s imagination as celebrities like Ashton Kutcher and Oprah jumped on the bandwagon. Facebook also missed making the top 10, though who really needs to search for these services at all.
Yahoo also publishes a list of business-related search terms on which Facebook and Twitter show up as number 1 and 2, respectively. Other hot business search terms include Hulu, Bing and both the new Palm Pre and iPhone smartphones.
Microsoft’s Bing also published a list of its top queries for 2009. Bing started in the middle of the year and published its rankings first, but also showed Michael Jackson as the most searched-for topic during 2009.
