Chinese sales of iPhone becoming a huge disappointment
It seems that legal iPhones are not selling all that well in mainland China.
As we reported last month, iPhone sales were being considered tepid at best in China, but it seems to only be getting worse. According to PCWorld, in the first two weeks of online sales in China, exactly five iPhones have been sold. Yes, five … as in the number of fingers on one hand.
The problem is mainly due to the pricing. The 32GB iPhone 3GS Sells for $800 USD without a contract in Hong Kong, but the same model sells for approximately $1,024 USD in the mainland. When you add in the fact that the Chinese version is missing Wi-Fi, and it makes the pricing even worse.
In just the first few days of sales at retail outlets, China Unicom had reportedly sold only 5,000 units. Considering that Apple reportedly prepared 5 million units for the country, there can’t be anyone happy about the pace of sales.
