MTV launches ‘digital abuse’ awareness campaign regarding sexting & cyber-bullying
Teenagers of today have, in many ways at least, got it easy. The technology that has been present for most of their young lives is enabling them to be the first truly connected generation. But there’s a darker side to the Web, mobile phones, and digital technology. And it’s A Thin Line between the two.
Teenagers are generally trend setters rather than followers. It is youngsters that pick up on fashions, genres of music, and technology and make them popular. A high percentage of youngsters now have a mobile phone and a computer of some description. Most will belong to a social network or two. And most will use the technology in their possession responsibly and in a wholesome manner. Maybe.
But there is a trend for digital abuse which various organizations are trying to crack down or or raise awareness of. The latest initiative in this field is being run by MTV, whose core demographic is at the heart of the matter. The music channel has launched its A Thin Line campaign, which endeavors to educate youngsters about the consequences of their digital behavior.
The campaign will run for a number of years, with initial plans for an MTV News special on sexting (sex texting), an episode of its True Life documentary series touching on the subject, and various PSAs designed to connect with youngsters.
Alongside the Associated Press, MTV commissioned a study (PDF Link) to find out how deep the issues run. 1,200 youngsters aged 14 to 24 were questioned on various subjects pertaining to how they conducted themselves online and in this digital age. 50 percent were found to have been the target of digital abuse, while 30 percent had sent or received naked pictures of themselves or others via text or online.
The depth of the problem becomes clearer when it’s realized that those hit by some form of digital abuse are more likely to be sexually active, or to smoke, take drugs, drink alcohol, or involved in crime.
