Sony to be the first to capture FIFA’s World Cup in 3D

December 6, 2009

Sony to be the first to capture FIFA's World Cup in 3D Sony has become a big proponent of 3D technology in recent years. The company is betting big on this tech by gearing many of its product lines to support 3D. Tech gurus have also predicted that this tech will go mainstream in the next few years. Sony is attempting to get an early jump by being the first to broadcast the FIFA World Cup in 3D.

CEO and President of Sony, Sir Howard Stringer has been pretty bullish about the prospects of 3D technology. The company recently demonstrated a television with 3D support along with blu-ray movies. The tech definitely looks cool as well as promising.

According to TFTS, Stringer believes that the transition to 3D is already underway and he wants to position Sony to be the industry leaders of this technology. This seems to be the same firm stance he took with blu-ray as well. Sony has also confirmed that its PS3 game console will have 3D support for video games and blu-ray movies.

To proactively push the technology, Sony will be the first to ever broadcast the FIFA World Cup in 3D. The company plans on broadcasting 25 games from the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which is being held in South Africa.

According to Stringer, this broadcast is possible due to Sony’s sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup.

He states:

Our sponsorship of the FIFA World Cup allows us to leverage our cutting-edge 3D technology and premier products with dazzling content to produce a unique and totally compelling viewing experience. 3D viewers around the world will feel as though they are inside the stadiums in South Africa, watching the games in person.

3D tech is already taking off at the theaters in the States. However, it will be interesting to see if Sony’s efforts to bring 3D content to the small screen, will help spur interest in 3D technology in the future.
