Twitter generates $6.5 million for DellIf you’re still set thinking Twitter is just random people having strange and meaningless conversations about nothing in particular then you should maybe talk to Dell Computers. The company has made $6 million directly from Twitter since 2007, over half of which has been accrued in the last few months.

Twitter has a growing band of followers, some of whom are very passionate about the social networking site and its ability to connect people in new ways. Twitter is being used in a variety of different ways; celebrities such as Stephen Fry and Ashton Kutcher are connecting with their fans, citizen journalists are reporting on news events from the front line, and companies are keeping customers up-to-date and interested.

In June, Dell Computers claimed it had made $3 million from Twitter since it joined the site in 2007. One million dollars of that figure was accrued in the first six months of 2009 as the number of people using Twitter shot up. Now, six months on from that and Dell is claiming the figure stands at $6.5 million. So in just the last three months Dell has accrued another $3.5 million in sales from its use of Twitter.

Dell has over 100 employees sending out tweets to the 1.5 million people it has following its DellOutlet account. Tweets range from special deals on PCs and accessories to help with tech support. And these have brought in $6.5 million in sales.

$6.5 million isn’t actually a huge amount considering Dell makes around $61.1 billion annually, and it would appear that the vast majority of those 1.5 million users don’t actually spend any money with the company. However, Twitter is proving it has the capacity to be much more than it currently is, allowing companies to connect with their customers while making a little money in the process.

Meanwhile, Twitter isn’t making a penny from the business being conducted on its service, at least for the time being.
