Author Stephen Covey’s deal a good sign for Kindle
Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People, has signed a deal to make the electronic editions of his next two books exclusive to the Kindle. While not a game-changer in itself, it’s a sign that Amazon’s reader might become popular enough to truly dominate the market.
Covey is hardly Stephen King, but he’s a big deal in the business book market and his most famous title has sold 15 million copies. Thanks to that, anything he does is going to have some influence over the people who make the decisions that matter in the world of business.
What’s really significant about his deal with electronic publisher RosettaBooks is that he’s effectively stating that the potential sales through the Kindle are enough to outweigh the potential benefits of being on all other electronic distribution channels.
The fact that he’s negotiated a deal to get royalties of more than half the sale price (far above those usually offered by electronic publishers) certainly helps, but Covey’s deal is still a symbolic blow to rival e-reader manufacturers.
