Capital Records suing Vimeo over lip dub videos
Apparently Capital Records is not a fan of the lip dub phenomenon on the Internet.
Capital Records has filed a lawsuit against video sharing site Vimeo for what it views as the company’s encouragement of lip dub videos. For those unfamiliar with lip dubs, they are videos of people mouthing the words and acting out well known songs. They have become quite popular on the various video sites, but Vimeo in particular has embraced them, even going so far as to produce its own a few years ago to the song “Flagpole Sitta” by Harvey Danger. (see video below)
According to the report from NewTeeVee, Capital Records complaint states that Vimeo “induces and encourages its users to upload … audiovisual works.” The suit also goes on to state that the service has not done enough to protect the copyrights of various companies.
Earlier this year Universal Music Group lost a similar case against Veoh, so we’re not sure why Capital thinks it has a better chance, but what are the holidays without a little legal wrangling?

As Capital Records appears to be against free positive publicity, I wonder what the artists think.
