MacDonalds offers Wi-Fi and fries
Wireless internet just got a little greasier. McDonalds has announced it is to offer free, unlimited wireless Internet use to customers.
Previously the service had cost $2.95 for everyone except AT&T subscribers, who got it without charge (AT&T being the provider). The firms have now struck a deal to waive that charge in 11,000 of the 13,000 U.S. locations from January.
The two sides didn’t announce any financial details of their deal, though the fast food chain reportedly believes customers will spend the savings on extra food. Logically that suggests McDonald’s will be paying a fee to AT&T for the service.
A McDonalds spokesman says customers won’t have to purchase any food to use the Wi-Fi. That probably doesn’t mean you’ll get away with turning a table into your office for the day, but at least now you’ll be able to check your e-mail while sneaking into the bathroom. And if you’re on the road and need to download a large file, the nearest McDonald’s parking lot may be your savior.
