Rumor: Google to acquire DocVerse
It seems that Google has some money burning a hole in its pocket, and it’s looking to spend all of it before the end of the year if all these acquisition rumors prove to be true.
In the past few days we have reported on Google supposedly acquiring Yelp, and that was followed up by Google looking to purchase Trulia. Well, here we are with yet another purchase rumor thanks to TechCrunch: Google is looking at acquiring DocVerse.
For those unfamiliar with the service. DocVerse is a plugin that allows users to do real-time collaboration in Microsoft Word, Power Point and Excel files. It allows for constant saving of versions, syncing between the involved parties and more. It has been likened to Google’s Wave product, which is still in limited beta release and is also a tool for real-time working between parties.
With Google’s own suite of office applications, it isn’t clear why the company would want to delve into the Microsoft Office pool. Some have speculated it is because Office 10, which is currently in beta testing, is going more online in an attempt to fight off Google Docs: Google takes a shot at Microsoft, Microsoft fire back and then Google fires back again.
Whatever the case may be, sources are saying that the price the two companies are discussing is $25 million, which fits in nicely with the rumored $1.5 billion Google supposedly wants to spend. The search engine giant spent $750 million on AdMob, is discussing $500 million with Yelp, $250 million with Trulia and $25 million with DocVerse. Okay, so it would be over budget by $25 million, but the founders of Google probably have that in their couch cushions.
Hopefully some of these rumors will turn to fact in the near future, and then we might get a clearer picture of what Google is up to.
