Netbook shipments double in down economy
Tough economic conditions resulted in lower computer sales in 2009 with netbooks being the only category to buck the trend with an explosion of the miniature notebook computers.
Netbook sales more than doubled during 2009 with 103 percent growth in the category. This could be partially because they’re still a new phenomenon, but it’s one that’s shifting hardware market share to companies like Acer, Asus and MSI.
It’s also possible that the weak economy is driving more users to switch to the less-expensive netbooks rather than buying a full laptop machine. Either way, the netbooks are driving down the average price of a computer and putting price pressure on the notebook market as well.
Though the market is predicted to rebound in 2010, the netbook computer is likely here to stay. We’ll have to wait and see if netbooks remain a consumer trend next year or if touch tablets take their place.
