iSlate rumored to be the name of the mythical Apple Tablet
Some evidence has been discovered via historical domain name data that the long rumored Apple Tablet may be named the iSlate.
MacRumors did some sleuthing and found that for a few weeks back in 2007 the privacy settings for a domain registration of a Web site called iSlate.com were turned off. During this time it was shown that Apple Inc. was the owner of the domain. Could this be the name of the long rumored Apple Tablet device?
When the privacy filters are turned on, the domain is shown as being registered to a group named MakeMonitor, which is known to help companies such as Apple hide who owns a domain name. The iSlate.com domain name has changed hands a couple of times over the years, but in 2007 it ended up in the hands of MakeMonitor, and then the privacy disappeared for a few weeks to show the Apple name. The domain name currently resolves to a broken link, but that could easily be changed at a moments notice.
MacRumors does have actual proof of the Apple registration, so there is no doubt that Apple owns it, but does that necessarily mean the company will use it? It is not unusual for companies to buy up domain names that they never intend to use simply to keep others from being able to buy it. Considering this was during the height of the iPhone frenzy, it could be that Apple was just buying up every iName domain name that it could. Let’s not forget that iPhone.com has two previous owners before Apple, so this could simply be a brand protection issue.
While iSlate is a definite possibility for the tablet’s name, it doesn’t have the usual sexy factor of an Apple product name. If the current rumors prove to be true, we should find out on Jan. 26th if this is the real deal or not.
