National Geographic offers 120 years of back issues on hard drive
Are you dying to know what National Geographic was writing about in 1888? Well, now you can see for yourself all on one convenient hard drive.
A hat tip to Download Squad for finding this fascinating new item National Geographic magazine is offering. You can now purchase 120 years of the popular magazine, starting with its first issue in 1888, on a 160 GB USB hard drive.
For $189.95 you get all of the issues from 1888 to 2008, and there is still 100 GB of space to spare that you can use for whatever you want, or reserve for future updates from the publisher. If the price is too high for your taste, you can also pick up the collection on DVD-ROM for $89.95.
While you may be asking why this is interesting, this could be a nifty way for print publishers to repurpose their older content and make money from it again. Imagine all the back issues of Playboy on a hard drive. Time magazine? Life? Print media is constantly saying it’s hurting financially, but there may be a way now for them to bring in some extra revenue from old content. Sure it wouldn’t be a huge stream of money, but at least it would be something.
