Nexus One price leaked ahead of official announcement
It appears the price of the Google phone, also known as the Nexus One, has leaked, and it’s nothing like anyone expected.
Ever since information first leaked earlier this month that a phone was coming out from Google, speculation has run rampant about how it would be a cheap smartphone as Google was sure to absorb some of the cost to get it into as many hands as possible.
Yeah … that didn’t quite work out.
According to information received by Gizmodo, the phone will be sold outright, also known as unsubsidized, for $530. If you purchase it with a two year contract through T-Mobile, the phone will be $180, but if you terminate the contract within 120 days, you’ll have to pay the outstanding $350 difference.
While many speculated that the phone would be sold cheaply, it just didn’t come to be. It was being viewed as a possible industry changing handset that would cause other smartphone manufacturers to rethink how they brought phones to market, and instead Google with the status quo if this information proves to be true.
The phone was very tantalizing to many while all of the guessing games over pricing was going on, but if you look at comments on blogs, and messages on Twitter now, you will see a lot of things like “no thanks” followed by a mention of the price. Instead of changing the industry, Google merely is releasing a phone that will do nothing more than compete with its existing hardware partners and not really bring anything new to the table.
In short, the tech blogosphere was extremely excited about this phone up until this information leaked, and now it is almost completely opposite with no excitement left over for the announcement that is scheduled for next week.
