Moon celebrates New Years with two rare events

December 31, 2009

Moon celebrates New Years with two rare eventsThe old saying of “once in a blue moon” will take on extra meaning tonight as 2010 is welcomed in by one.

A blue moon is defined as any month that has two full moons. This isn’t quite as rare as you may think, with it actually happening once every 2.5 years, but this is the first time it has happened on New Years Eve since 1990.  The next blue moon to happen on the dawning of a new year will be in 2028, so enjoy this one while you can!

And if you happen to live in Europe, Asia or Africa, you’ll also get a special treat tonight of a partial lunar eclipse.  So if you’re a backyard astronomer, you may want to get our your telescope for this extra special event.  Those of us in other parts of the world will just have to make do with the blue moon.
