Google Chrome becomes third most popular browser

Google Chrome becomes third most popular browserIt isn’t by a huge margin, but Google’s Chrome Web browser has found itself in the third position amongst browsers now, just beating out Apple’s Safari.

Third place may not seem like the best position to be in a race, but when first and second are so far ahead, getting to third can be quite an achievement.  In Web browser data for Dec. 2009 released by NetApplications, its been revealed that Google Chrome now has a 4.63 perccent market share compared to Apple Safari’s share of 4.46 percent.  It’s a slim margin to be sure, but seeing as Chrome has only been out for eighteen months, and it only just added Mac and Linux support, it’s a pretty good sign that the lead will only widen.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still reigns supreme with 62.69 percent market share, but that down almost a full percentage point from a month prior.  This caps off six months of market share slide for the venerable IE, but with Mozilla’s Firefox a distant second with 24.61 percent market share, it doesn’t look like IE will be lost the number one spot any time soon.

The market share that is being lost for Internet Explorer seems to be coming from sources other than Firefox, though.  Although Safari slipped to fourth place, it still gained some ground of 0.1 percent.  Opera, which is in fifth place, also picked up some share and now commands 2.4 percent of the market.  So it does seem consumers are finally getting outside of the Internet Explorer stranglehold, but there is still a lot of people out there that just never switch from the pre-installed browser.

Interestingly, in tenth place is the Playstation browser with 0.04%.  Sure it is a minuscule share of the market, but intriguing that people would choose to browse the Internet from their game consoles.  Perhaps convergence really is upon us at last.
