Spotify U.S. with Google Nexus One?
Spotify has been available in parts of Europe for a couple of years now, yet the company’s efforts to launch in the U.S. have so far come to nothing. But there may be good news on the horizon, with a free Spotify launching soon, and the Google Nexus One phone being a key player in the whole thing.
Spotify is a totally joyful application which gives users the chance to stream music for free in exchange for the occasional advert. It’s available in its native Sweden, the U.K., and a number of other European countries. But a long-desired U.S. launch keeps being stalled by the major record labels desire to make people pay for their content at every turn. So the free advertising-based model Spotify prefers isn’t going down well.
However, TechCrunch reports there could be movement happening.
The long-awaited Google Phone, now named Nexus One, is expected to make its debut tomorrow (Jan. 5), and Spotify could be a part of its launch. In order to make this happen, Google may have agreed to compensate the labels for their content to the tune of $4 per user per month.
For those users not accessing Spotify via Google’s new smartphone, use could still be free but available to only a very limited number of people. Which sounds ominous.
