Forget bulbs, choose light-emitting wallpaper
We’ve all got dozens of lightbulbs in our houses. If you’re in the U.K. then the chances are you have more than enough of the energy saving variety. However, light bulbs of any kind could soon be a thing of the past, with the wallpaper in your home providing all the light sources you’ll ever need.
According to The Independent, Britain’s Carbon Trust has given its backing to an endeavor to develop light-emitting wallpaper which would do away with the need for lightbulbs in the future. The developers Lomax have been given a £454,000 grant to fine-tune the idea until it’s workable and ready to go into production.
The wallpaper uses OLED technology built into the very fabric of the wallpaper, thus giving a room coated in the material a cheap and very natural-looking light source. The problem of OLED’s short life-span is said to have been solved by making the technology only emit light on one axis.
This is just one of 160 schemes the Carbon Trust is currently supporting. Here’s hoping at least some see the light of day.
