Kindle DX goes international
Amazon has announced it will sell the Kindle DX, the largest model in its electronic reader range, in more than 100 countries. The retail price is the same as in the U.S., but import duties and service restrictions makes it less value overseas.
The 9.7-inch model will ship from Jan. 10 for $489. However, the buyer will be responsible for paying any local taxes, which could be a significant amount (for example, around $85 in the United Kingdom). There will also be international shipping charges.
The device will also be missing several features from the U.S. version, including blogs, the web browser, and all images from newspapers and magazines (a move designed to cut data transfer costs).
Amazon notes that the original Kindle is now its best selling item in several countries outside the U.S. While that’s true, it’s a little misleading as it only refers to sales from Amazon.com rather than local sites, meaning its only really being compared to products which must be imported from the U.S. rather than the entire Amazon range.
