Minneapolis completes $20 million dollar Wi-Fi project

Minneapolis completes $20 million dollar Wi-Fi projectMinneapolis, Minn. has completed its $20 million dollar Wi-Fi project to blanket the entire city in the Internet technology.

The Star Tribune is reporting that after two-and-a-half years of work, less than one square mile of Minneapolis is now blanketed in Wi-Fi, and that last portion will be completed once the necessary power is delivered to the area. The new network, owned by US Internet, already has 16,500 subscribers, but hopes to see that jump to 30,000 over the next few years. After some testing is completed, the city will also begin to use the network for communication between emergency services.

Many cities have tried to launch city-wide Wi-Fi networks, and while some were successful, they eventually have all been shut down.  Hopefully this one will be different as it is a subscription service where the others tried to do it for free, but the dream of using Wi-Fi no matter where you are in a city is a pleasant one to say the least.  Hey, now you could fly your AR.Drone anywhere you want!
