Nexus One ad on Google homepage
Google wasted no time in promoting its new Nexus One phone, the first official Google phone. Despite having only been officially announced and launched yesterday, an advert is already appearing on the Google homepage, which is the primest of the prime Internet advertising space.
Google doesn’t usually run adverts on its homepage. It’s considered a sacred space, with such high visibility and usage numbers that clogging it up with advertising before anyone’s actually clicked on the Search button tantamount to daubing graffiti on a gravestone. Except for when Google has a new product it needs to push to the public.
Which is why some users (but not all) are seeing a Nexus One advert running right under the Search bar. Comments on the TechCrunch article suggest this is only being seen in America, which would make sense as that’s the only market yet graced with the Google phone.
This isn’t the first time Google has advertised on its homepage, with Chrome being promoted in the same way after it first launched.
