China blocks IMDb over Tibet film

January 8, 2010

China blocks IMDb over Tibet filmIMDb, the Internet Movie database, is the latest site to be blocked by the Great Firewall of China. Unsurprisingly, it isn’t because the site contains information on a number of truly awful films that the Chinese authorities wouldn’t want their citizens having the misfortune of watching.

Instead, it’s assumed, although not confirmed in any way, that the block has been put in place due to a number of films detailing Tibet and its struggle for freedom being present on the site. In particular this documentary film called When The Dragon Swallowed The Sun, which Digital Inspiration claims is the main reason behind the block.

And God forbid that any Chinese person gets to read about Tibet and its desire not to be a part of the People’s Republic of China. Why, if the average Chinese citizen were to have any notion of sympathy for the Tibetans, the world could surely end.

Google services are already patchy – I have problems 20% of the time, esp on news and images. I swear it’s also an economic conspiracy that reeks of protectionism.

Wiki seems to me the most likely to go next – google would probably get to angry at the loss of business, something wiki’s not so concerned with…

  6. FreedomLover:

Be sure you go to Beijing and shout that, ‘freedomlover’ ahahahaha

  7. Anna:

wiki has been blocked before, but just before the Olympics they unblocked it. The “sensitive” pages are still not accessible though.
I wish they would do the same to imdb, at least we could still use it that way.

If Tibet has been a part of China historically, why Chinese government is concerned about Chinese citizens reading about Tibetan activities.

If the Chinese citizens love the one-party communist government so much, why do they have to fear of their own people.

So, why does the communist government need to block some websites to control the flow of information.

The citizen’s will not listen to propaganda, isn’t it?

  9. Terry:

I am from China, as a citizen, I feel so shamed about this.

These Governors are coward. Sealed a website just because of a movie. And if these such things goes on ,Chinese network will soon become the largest Lan in the world.

P.S. I love my country, but I hate Communist party.

The Chinese government would rather think of themselves than the citizens. This is a violation of human rights.
