Triple-core processors the sweet point for laptops says AMD
AMD is to release triple core processors for laptops for the first time. It believes the chips will prove a successful blend of performance and power efficiency.
Until now, AMD has only produced single and dual-core processors for laptops, while rivals Intel offer quad-core processors for portable machines. The AMD theory is that some users don’t want the added expense and heat issues of a quad-core machine, but could still benefit from an extra core. One example given is the ability to have the extra core running a full virus check, making it easier to keep a computer fully protected without limiting its performance.
Meanwhile Intel appears to be shifting its marketing efforts away from high-end, high-priced chips, instead targeting the mass market with its latest ranges. The new releases include some of the first 32-nanometer chips. That’s a reference to the size of the circuitry and is approximately two-thirds the size of AMD’s smallest chips. The smaller circuitry means the same-sized chip can run a faster processor; alternatively the same processing ability can be achieved on a smaller chip drawing less power.
