New Facebook meme – White or Black – has breast cancer awareness message

New Facebook meme - White or Black - has breast cancer awareness messageFacebook memes come and go very quickly, and I’m sure this latest one will be no exception. However, this one has a more important message at its core than most. It’s quite literally a matter of life and death.

If you use Facebook on a regular basis – or Twitter or MySpace for that reason – you’ve probably been noticing an inordinate number of updates consisting of just one word and no explanation of its meaning. The word could be Black, White, Brown, Pink, Blue, or even Gray for the more honest women out there.

And it is just women who have been posting these updates, although cross-dressing men could also feel like taking part. That’s because the updates are in response to a simple request – to reveal the color of the bra you are currently wearing.

I’ve been seeing these strange updates for almost a week now. The odd Black here, the odd White there. I didn’t know what was going on, but didn’t want to show my ignorance by asking any of the posters. So I remained ignorant for a few more days before intrigue got the better of me.

And I’m glad I investigated because the meme isn’t just randomers posting colors for no reason. Instead, it’s a campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer. Strangely, no one seems to quite know where the meme originated, although it started out as an email chain letter before hitting the social networks.

Most Web trends these days tend to be started by companies or individuals with an ulterior motive. But this appears to have grown very organically. And I’m glad it has as breast cancer is a serious and widespread illness hitting more people now than ever before.

The only problem I see with this campaign is that there eventually needs to be some explanation of the meaning behind the updates, or what’s the point? Not everyone is going to search for an explanation of the updates themselves, so I hope everyone who has written such an update over the past week or so now posts a more revealing one. No, not a picture, but a link to a cancer charity or a fact sheet on breast cancer.
