Consumer Electronics Show attendance stronger than forecast
The Consumer Electronics Association, which hosted the event at which many of our recent stories originated, says attendance bounced back somewhat this year. But it may be premature to say the crowds at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas guarantee a great year for the tech industry.
The CEA’s initial estimate of 120,000 guests compares with a confirmed attendance of 113,085 last year. There was a slight drop in the number of companies exhibiting, though that appears to be as much down to firms giving the event a miss as it does to them no longer being in business.
While it’s certainly encouraging that more people attended the event, there are a couple of factors that may have caused the increase beyond the tech industry’s inherent strength. The promise of 3D television displays may have swung some would-be attendees as that’s clearly a technology which has to be seen in person to be appreciated. ChannelWeb also notes that Las Vegas had better weather and cheaper hotel rates than during the CES period in recent years.
