Modern Warfare 2 surpasses $1 billion in sales
It is unclear how anyone can doubt that video games have grown into their adulthood when you hear reports of one of them surpassing the $1 billion dollar sales mark.
It is rare for any single entertainment property to surpass $1 billion in sales; only five films have ever done so, and, yes, one of those is Avatar. And while video games sell for far more than the price of a movie ticket, it is still a difficult achievement for any game to unlock. (See what I did there? Video game humor!)
Well, you can now add Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to this very elite club. “Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records,” said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”
$550 million of those sales came in just the first five days of sales, meaning that the game grossed almost as much as The Dark Knight did in the Summer of 2008, but in less than a week where it took that film months to do so.
What is so appealing about this game? Good question, and as I self-confessed addict myself, I really would be hard pressed to tell you. The multiplayer portion of the game is definitely the draw, and it is probably a combination of word-of-mouth marketing amongst friends, and possibly even some curiosity that is keeping this game selling.
The question now is if this will help the general population realize that video games have become a real industry, and not something just for kids any more.
