PDF vulnerability used to hack Google and Adobe
A recently-patched vulnerability in Adobe’s PDF technology was used in the attacks announced by both companies yesterday. Adobe also confirmed that the timing of the attacks was more than coincidental.
Google announced that the company would stop censoring its search results in China and could pull its operations out of the country altogether. That move was prompted by the discovery that Google’s network had been compromised by an attack originating out of China.
Now the companies have disclosed that a PDF was used by the attackers to exploit a vulnerability in Adobe’s Reader software to gain access to both Google’s network and Adobe. Google’s original announcement claimed that at least 20 companies were targeted, though only these two have come forward so far.
So far, the only response to Google’s announcement from China is to say that all companies doing business in China must abide by the law of the land.
