China-Google dispute: US government takes hands off role
The United States government is refusing to be drawn into the dispute between Google and the Chinese authorities over Web censorship. However, it is to make a formal protest about hacking attacks on the firm believed to have originated in the country.
The U.S. ambassador to China, Jon Huntsman said the issue of mandatory censorship of Web results involved freedoms which were key to American principles. But he noted the issue had to be settled between Google and the Chinese government and that the outcome would not be influenced by US officials.
Meanwhile a spokesman for the U.S. State department said it plans to issue a demarche next week over the hacking incident which will “request information from China as to an explanation of how it happened and what they plan to do about it.” A demarche is a formal communication where a government wishes to make a complaint or query in a public fashion.
