McDonalds begins offering free Wi-Fi at most locationsEver wished you could keep your laptop around greasy food more often, but always lamented the lack of free Wi-Fi in fast food restaurants? Well, your dream has finally come true!

McDonalds has launched free Wi-Fi in 11,500 of its 14,000 locations across the United States according to Reuters.  The service used to cost $2.95 for two hours of usage, but as of Jan. 15, it is now free and unlimited.  Of course, “unlimited” probably means until some manager gets annoyed with you for taking up a seat during dinner rush, but if you need to dart in and check email you probably won’t have a problem, just don’t expect to do a raid in World of Warcraft while enjoying your Big Mac.

There is no word on which locations don’t have the service, but our guess would be the smaller style locations like the ones inside of some Walmarts.  If it is a stand-alone traditional McDonalds, odds are pretty good that they’ll have it.

With this launch, McDonalds has become the largest provider of free Wi-Fi in the United States, although Starbucks would have to be a close second.  The famous coffee chain does require you to make five purchases with your Starbucks Card prior to getting the free Wi-Fi access, but once you have fulfilled that requirement, you can have up to two hours of free Wi-Fi per day at any of the company’s thousands of locations.

With free Wi-Fi showing up in more and more places, about the only place left that is going to be without Internet access is in your actual car, and that is already happening thanks to MyFord Touch.  Combine this with Skype on your iPhone, and you might not even need a cellular phone plan any more.
