Apple dominated mobile app sales in 2009
Apple accounted for 99.4 percent of all mobile apps sold last year. While most apps continue to cost just a few dollars, the market for mobile apps is already worth billions and growing.
The App Store has been available on iTunes since July 2008 and helped set the direction for a bunch of wannabes. However none of the competitors from the Android Market to Windows Mobile’s online marketplace have been able to put a dent in Apple’s momentum.
According to Gartner, over 2.5 billion mobile apps were paid for online last year totaling $4.2 billion in sales. The market is expected to grow to $6.8 billion in 2010 and could grow to nearly $30 billion by the year 2013.
With the dozens of phones coming out running Google’s Android mobile operating system, the Android Market could put a dent in Apple’s market share in 2010. However, so far Apple has created the most usable and engaging mobile application platform in the world.
