Buried in an earthquake? There’s an App for that – iPhone used to survive in Haiti
It seems there’s an App for absolutely everything these days. And yes, that even includes being buried under a ton of rubble in an earthquake.
Dan Wooley is an American filmmaker who was in Haiti making a documentary about poverty when the earthquake struck last week. He was in his hotel at the time, and found himself alive but buried under six stories of building.
According to MSNBC, having lost his glasses during the tremor, Wooley used his camera to illuminate and take pictures of his surroundings before taking refuge in an elevator shaft. And then the Apple magic began.
Wooley used a first-aid iPhone app (Pocket First Aid and CPR) to patch up a gash in his leg and to stop the bleeding from a head wound. The app also mentioned not falling asleep so as to avoid going into shock, so Wooley set the alarm on his iPhone to go off every 20 minutes.
More than 60 hours later, Wooley was located and rescued by a French rescue team, and is now recovering in a Miami hospital.
A truly amazing story, and one that makes me warm to Apple and iPhone just a little bit.
