Opera joins the mobile ad war with AdMarvel acquisition

Opera joins the mobile ad war with AdMarvel acquisition Both Google and Apple have planted their stake in the ground of mobile advertising by acquiring mobile ad networks. Not to be outdone, Opera Software is expanding into mobile ads from browsers with the purchase of AdMarvel.

The mobile advertising industry is still in its infancy, though the number of handsets online could surpass the number of computers as soon as 2013. In fact, there could be over 1 billion devices online by 2013 according to market research firm IDC.

It’s no wonder, then, that so many established software companies want to get a slice of the mobile advertising pie. However the interesting thing is that neither Opera nor Apple were in the advertising space before buying their way in.

It could be that these companies expect to get an edge in mobile ads by analyzing user preference or location data gathered by their browser. The question is whether that will be enough to get buyers to jump from the one-stop shop of buying through Google.
