Tetris makes a comeback with 100 million mobile downloads The most popular puzzle video game is making a comeback just in time for its 25th anniversary with mobile versions flying off the virtual store shelves, but is 1984 the future of mobile gaming?

Tetris was originally created in the Soviet-era Russia by developer Alexey Pajitnov, who is still involved in decisions about the game to this day. Recently, EA Mobile revived the game in a version meant specifically for mobile devices.

The mobile version of Tetris is now available in 60 countries and on 64,000 different handsets. The game is doing well on all kinds of devices with only about 20 percent of them being smartphones.

The iPhone version of the game costs five dollars to download, a relatively steep price for the iTunes App Store. However the Tetris name is well proven and worthwhile for gamers that like puzzles.

It’s nice to see a game that helps develop spatial knowledge remain fun and challenging even after 25 years, but with all the hype about gaming coming to mobile devices, are 8-bit games all we have to look forward to?
