EBay lowering auction fees for sellers as of March 30
Online auction site eBay has announced that it is lowering certain listing fees effective March 30.
The site that pioneered the online auction format has seen a massive drop off in its traffic over the past year, but it appears that eBay is finally ready to do something to start luring sellers back to its doors. Hopefully this will bring buyers back also, but only time will tell if it does.
EBay has announced that effective March 30, it is introducing two new pricing packages that could save sellers hundreds of dollars a year in listing fees. For the casual seller, you’ll see a massive change in listing fees, as well as the final value fee –the price paid for a successful auction — will now be much easier to calculate.
- No Insertion Fees for Auction-style listings when you list your item with a start price under $1—up to 100 listings per month. Pay only if your item sells.
- New low Insertion Fees when you list your item with a start price of $1 or more
- One easy Final Value Fee of 9 percent of the winning bid—and never more than $50—regardless of your start price or final selling price.
- 50-cent Insertion Fee for Fixed Price with Final Value Fees for the most part staying the same
This of course doesn’t take into account any fees you pay to PayPal for accepting a payment, which has become about the only way sellers can accept payments now, but at least the risk of selling something you found in the garage has been reduced.
For the more serious seller who uses eBay stores, you will also see some drastic changes.
- Insertion Fees as low as 3 cents for Fixed Price listings with full exposure in search results
- Fixed Price Final Value Fees for the most part staying the same
- New low Auction-style Insertion Fees
- Auction-style Final Value Fees significantly reduced over the new standard rate
- FREE pictures—up to 12 per listing
- FREE Selling Manager Pro with Premium and Anchor subscriptions
- Plus all the other great marketing tools you get with an eBay Stores subscription, including your own customizable store front and Markdown Manager.
The 3¢ listing fee is only if you pay the $299.95 a month store rate, but there are lower packages with higher insertion fees. There is a new fee calculator you can use to see which plan will work best for you come March 30.
If this is a big enough move to win back the sellers eBay has lost over the past few years remains to be seen, but it should be a step in the right direction.

Why wait until March 30th ? How come they don’t implement it now?

I fail to see how waiting another two months to lower fees is going to do anything to retain sellers that are leaving in droves. And exactly HOW do lower seller fees draw ANY buyers back?

NINE PERCENT final value fee? That’s INSANE.

Ralph, they want to pump their 1st quarter numbers up by panicking sellers into listing now to avoid the 9% FVF.

They will save u a few cents on the initial listing then jew you for an extra $10-30 dollars on the back end. Technically they are not lying but overall this is a massive fee increase if you sell anything for more than $25 or less than $2000.

This is indeed a massive fee INCREASE for most sellers that Ebay is deceptively spinning as a fee DECREASE. When you intentionally omit as much important information from your press release as Ebay has, I think the word “lying” does apply. Some online bloggers have already caught on to Ebay’s new scam in great detail, and here is one of them:

The decrease is just for listing for $1 listing. Basically useless at current is only fives cents or ten cents. The Final value Fee (FVF) has a huge increase. For example, a $700 laptop have a FVF of $27.38 now. With the new change, the FVF will be $36.50, a $9.12 increase compare to the the current $27.38 is a 33.3% increase.
How can they state: “Final Value Fees for the most part staying the same.” ????? If a 33% fee increase is staying the same, then how much would eBay consider a increase.
Totally unbelievable.

It is obvious that eBay is again trying to deceive sellers, very similar to their current 5 “FREE” insertion fees per month where they get you for 8.75% of the entire amount, compared to paying only 3.5% of the portion between $25 and $1000 if you pay an insertion fee. Worst case after March 30 is a sale for $555.55 which will have final value fee + insertion fee = $50 compared to pre-March 30 cost of about $21, for a loss of about $29 for the seller. This change will drive MORE sellers AWAY, not bring them back. eBay must think we are fools.

Yes, so many sites parroted ebay’s press release about lowering fees, when in almost every scenario, the new structure is a huge fee increase.
Personally, I’ve been using the 5-free/month feature with fees capped at $20, and selling items for in the range of $500 to $1000. Now selling those 5 items each month will cost me about $250 instead of $100.

Ebay is just chasing sellers away with this new format
i just closed my store-i was wondering why my account balance was going up almost $5 a day when nothing was selling-
good till cancelled listings were renewing @ 20 cents as opposed to 3 cents
all other fee’s are increased, i dont know why they think sellers are so stupid
not only am i done selling on ebay i’m done buying too-
there’s plenty of places to buy things online-the prices were not that cheap anyway-except maybe phone chargers-
Ebay = pure greed…and i dont want any part of it
