Will Android eclipse the iPhone by 2013?
With rumors that the fourth iPhone and Apple tablet ringing through the news, it’s hard to imagine the iPhone and Blackberry brands getting beat by Android in the next few years. However, analysts at IDC believe that Android might do just that.
It’s mind boggling to predict that the Android mobile operating system will pass both of these established phone platforms, especially without a hit device. While the G1, Droid and Nexus One all did reasonably well in terms of sales, none of them have matched the throngs of fans waiting in line to get the next iPhone.
However Android manages to turn this weakness into a strength by creating an Android ecosystem across multiple handset makers and wireless carriers. Android won’t win on the merits of one device, rather based on an army of Android phones from Motorola, HTC and others.
In fact, IDC predicts that Android will surpass Windows Mobile and Linux as standard operating systems to become one of the most dominant smartphone platforms on the market. The only platform that is likely to maintain its lead in terms of market share is Nokia’s Symbian platform.
