Apple Fail: The iPad name isn’t even original… according to Fujitsu
The name that Apple eventually settled on for its new tablet PC has taken a battering over the past couple of days. IPad is too close to iPod for comfort and, more notably, sounds like it’s a sanitary towel required by women once a month. And it now turns out the iPad name isn’t even original, with Fujitsu threatening legal action, and several other products by that name already established.
Apple unveiled its new tablet PC, the iPad, earlier this week to a very mixed response. Some people think the iPad will revolutionize home computing and the way we access online content, while others think it’s an unnecessary product which has too many issues, faults, and missing features to be considered worthy.
Now, Fujitsu is claiming Apple has failed in its choice of name too. That’s because the Japanese company applied for a trademark for its own iPad in 2003. The Fujitsu iPad is a handheld, touchscreen device to help stores manage inventories on the move. Masahiro Yamane, director of Fujitsu’s public relations division, told The New York Times, “It’s our understanding that the name is ours.”
However, that’s not the full story. Fujitsu wasn’t even the first company to apply for an iPad trademark, with an American information technology security company called Mag-Tek beating it to the punch. This led Fujitsu’s filing to stall, with the USPTO listing the application as abandoned in 2009. This prompted Fujitsu to revive its application. Apple then noted its interest in the name and used a proxy to apply for the trademark itself.
A similar thing happened with the iPhone name, which Cisco Systems owned the trademark for when Apple decided to call its new smartphone that anyway. The companies eventually decided to share the name, and it’s thought that a similar agreement is likely between Apple and Fujitsu. But that would still leave Mag-Tek, Siemens (which uses iPad for motors), and Coconut Grove (maker of the iPad padded bra).
Sheesh. I thought Apple was meant to be original and innovative, but clearly not. It looks like the iPad is a big fail in every single way. So I’m sure it will go on to sell out everywhere and prove all the doubters wrong. Because that’s usually what happens when it comes to Apple.

I’m using a beta version of ie 10.0 and this blog post on your website is not coming up perfectly. The right sidebar appears to hover on top of the post making it kind of hard to read the text of the page. I wonder if your website has to be updated or whether internet explorer 10 is just not quite ready for prime time yet. Some have found that mostly all sites work fine though. Thanks.
