The FCC has not approved the iPad for sale yet

January 31, 2010

The FCC has not approved the iPad for sale yet With Apple’s recent announcement of the much rumored iPad, one would expect that the device would be ready to be sold. The launch timeframe for the device is only a few short months away and according to reports the device has not been legally approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) yet.

Unlike many of Apple’s products, the iPad will only have two months in between the announcement and launch. The iPhone had a six month window before the actual announcement of the device, giving the company ample time to work out the legalities. According to Wired, something interesting was discovered about the iPad. Apparently in the specs sheet sent out by Apple, there is a rather tiny disclaimer stating that the iPad has not been approved by the FCC.

Nobody really expects that the device won’t be approved. I’m sure Apple has put the iPad through the paces to ensure that it meets all of the FCC’s criteria for gadgets that require wireless transmissions, such as radiation emission and wireless interference.

However, there is also the political side of things as the iPad will have the whole telecommunication carrier aspect as well. In an e-mail sent by Apple recently, the company notes that some features and applications would not be available in all areas.

The letter states:

Application availability and pricing are subject to change. This device has not yet been authorized as required by the rules of the Federal Communications Commission. This device is not, and may not be, offered for sale or lease, or sold or leased, until authorization is obtained.

Apparently there are those that speculate that Apple may be hedging their bets in hopes that the FCC may come back and force the company to sell the device to all wireless carriers. This may be something Apple wants but can’t be achieved due to the exclusive agreement with AT&T.

Geez, the entire jist of this article is just plain STUPID. What Ferro, are you now just churning out drivel like Parrack? Come on…

Well NO DUH the device isn’t approved yet. You actually think Apple is stupid enough to have provided test units to the FCC (notorious for their leaks) prior to even announcing the device?

I’m sorry if this is a silly question, but I’m from the UK and I don’t understand what the FCC does? Do all peices of technology in the US have to be approved by them? Is there any realistic chance that it won’t be approved after the amount of money that Apple have put into developing and advertising the iPad?

Sigh… more government bureaucracy and red tape.
