Doppelganger Week violates Facebook Terms of Use… but it’s just a bit of fun
Another week, another new Facebook craze. 2010 has already seen the ‘Bra color’ meme sweep the social networking site’s status updates, and now comes Doppelganger Week, which as its name suggests asks everyone to replace their usual profile picture with one of the celebrity that most resembles them. Unfortunately, this one will lead many people to break Facebook’s Terms of Use.
It’s Doppelganger Week, with those people interested enough in the latest Facebook fad posting a picture of the personality they most look like or who most sums them up instead of their usual profile pic.
However, as CNet points out, this means most people will break Facebook’s Terms of Use, which states that users “cannot post content that infringes someone else’s rights.” So unless you’ve taken the photo of said lookalike celeb yourself or have permission to use the picture, you’re breaching the law.
Hopefully this won’t actually be acted on. Doppelganger Week is, after all, merely a bit of lighthearted fun. Facebook has stated it only acts to remove content if it receives a request from a copyright holder, and I suspect we’ll all be fine on that score.
