The Wall Street Journal lowers its paywall for one day thanks to sponsorThe Wall Street Journal site is normally a subscription-based, or “paywall”, site, but thanks to Acura, you can explore it for free today.

Business Insider is reporting that Honda has purchased all the advertising on WSJ.com to promote its new Acura ZDX.  The ads appear to be rotating between images of the car and messages that say:

The Wall Street Journal Online is FREE Today. Explore the entire site and all its exclusive features.

Brought to you by Acura.

The Wall Street Journal has been one of the leaders in the paywall movement, which requires people to subscribe to a site if they wish to read more than a snippet of a story. While there is no indication that this might become a regular event, it certainly leaves the door open to other such instances happening.

With more and more sites discussing going subscription only, perhaps this could be a way to increase the effectiveness of advertising by giving away entire sites for free for a day at a time.
