Broadband? That’ll cost you $70k
Many people now see broadband as a right rather than a luxury. And yet those living in rural areas in countries with good infrastructures still often go without. One couple in England has been quoted £45,000 ($70,000) for their home to be connected to the network. Unsurprisingly, they aren’t happy.
Ray and Frei Walker live in a village of 150 people in Cumbria. BT Broadband is available to the residents but when the Walkers tried to get connected they were told it would cost £45,000. BT claims there is no capacity left on the network, and so new equipment and cabling would have to be fitted. All at the expense of the couple or their current phone supplier Phone Co-Op.
Mr. Walker told The Telegraph:
They seem to be wanting us to pay for equipment which will upgrade the whole village, and that’s what makes it more galling. We just want the same crap broadband service as everybody else in the village but BT won’t even let us have that.
It’s just a shame Mr. Walker isn’t a BT executive as I’m guessing he wouldn’t have any trouble getting connected if he was. BT boss Sir Michael Rake recently caused controversy in his Oxfordshire village by being the first in the area to get broadband.
