Flickr founder finds a ‘Glitch’ in gaming
The man who bought us Flickr is now entering the world of online gaming with Glitch, a 2D platform game set in a surreal world. Can Stewart Butterfield do for online gaming what he’s already done for photo-sharing?
Web games are becoming big business. Usually offered on a free basis with money derived from selling extra items, characters and weapons, these MMOs (Massive Multiplayer Online) are perfect for casual gamers. And there’s a wealth of these games to choose from.
Facebook is full of them, as I’m sure anyone who has seen Farmville and Mafia Wars status updates will already know. But they’re small beer compared to the likes of Free Realms and Evony.
And now a new contender is entering the ring in the form of Glitch.
Flickr actually began as an online game so Glitch is a return to Butterfield’s roots. Flickr ended up evolving and then being acquired by Yahoo for $35 million. So I’m sure Butterfield and his Tiny Speck firm will be hoping for similar success with Glitch.
The full version of Glitch will launch in the fall but impatient gamers can register now to be a part of the alpha testing.
