Google to launch turbo-speed Internet connectionsThink your Internet connection is fast now? Just wait until Google rolls out its turbo-charged connection trials over this coming year.

Google announced today that is accepting applications from municipalities around the United States for a trial run the company is planning of an Internet connection that would offer speeds of 1 gigabit per second (1 Gbps).  To translate that into terms that you are more familiar with, this connections would be running approximately 125 MB/s, most current fiber optic connections run around 35.

City government officials can head over to the Google Fiber for Communities page and submit an application.  If you aren’t an official, you can also still nominate your city for consideration. Nominations run through the end of March, and there is no word on when actual roll out would be, or how much it would cost beyond being “competitively priced.”

Good luck to all of the cities that choose to apply!
