Rumor: Amazon to give away free Kindles to Amazon Prime subscribersWe would suggest taking this with a grain of salt at this time, but there is a rumor going around this morning that Amazon may start giving away free Kindle e-readers to select customers some time in the very near future.

According to “a reliable source” that spoke with TechCrunch recently, Amazon is looking into the possibility of giving free Kindles to customers of its Amazon Prime service.  Amazon Prime is a subscription-based service that costs $79 a year and allows the customer unlimited second day air shipping on nearly all the products sold by Amazon.  It also gives significant discounts on next day and same day delivery.

This would be a follow-up to a program from a few months back where select customers were offered a free Kindle if they purchased it and did not love it.  The difference this time would they would be free from the start.

Apparently the hope is that the company would make up its money in e-book purchases from these customers, and it would also increase Amazon’s customer base for negotiations with publishers.

No word on when this project may happen was revealed at this time.
