MySpace Tom looks to be no more, how long until MySpace itself follows him?
Tom, the man who not only co-founded and ran MySpace but also befriended everyone who joined the site may well have collected his last noob in the stalkerish way only he knew how. The only question now is how long MySpace itself can survive.
MySpace was the absolute bomb just a few short years ago. Everyone was on it, including your favorite bands. It was alive, fresh, exciting, and vital. Now? It’s none of those things. People are deserting the once king of the social networks at a rate of knots, and it surely cannot be long until it expires.
Tom Anderson was a co-founder of MySpace who acted as president when everything was going well. He also had the enviable task of being everyone’s first friend when they joined the social network, ensuring even noobs weren’t alone in this exciting new playground.
Last year, the founding team at MySpace were shown the door as News Corp and its head honcho Rupert Murdoch attempted to restructure the company to better suit its wants and needs. Tom was kept on, although it was in a new role which some have referred to as “a mascot.”
However, Anderson’s time at the company may soon be coming to an end. TechCrunch reports that his role as ‘first friend’ has been taken over by ‘MySpace Today’, and Anderson hasn’t signed in to that account since Jan. 24. He did however sign in to his personal account just a couple of days ago.
Anderson’s alleged passing is a sad day for everyone who has ever had a MySpace account and seen his smug face show up on their friends list. However, it could portend a much more serious happening: the death of MySpace itself.
MySpace is still a popular site, but its traffic is dropping all the time. I personally don’t know anyone who still uses MySpace, with every sane person having skipped over to Facebook ages ago.
News Corp. isn’t a company that will retain a failing business, and that is exactly what MySpace is becoming. So how long does it have left? I think it may be time to start a deathwatch for MySpace. I give it a year at most.

One can only hope the MySpace death spiral is quicker than was Geocities and is AOL’s.
