Facebook deletes 30 prisoners’ profiles
Despite British prisoners being banned from using social networking sites, and barred from using the Internet at all except for educational purposes, some convicted criminals have been updating their Facebook pages from behind bars. Not any longer, as the British government is cracking down, and Facebook is complying with the requests to delete profiles.
There have been a couple of high profile cases of late concerning British prisoners using Facebook. One used the site to taunt police after he escaped, while another updated the site while still inside. And his isn’t an isolated case, with at least 30 prisoners found to have used smuggled mobile phones to access the site from within their cells.
The British Government has decided enough is enough, and Facebook has already deleted 30 profiles of known prisoners.
This has led some people to argue of government interference, but when prisoners are using Facebook to taunt both the authorities and their victims then I cannot see any other solution.
So if you spot a friend disappearing from Facebook, maybe they’re inside and have been caught out. It’s unlikely, but you never know.
