Facebook becoming major traffic source for Web sites
It seems users of popular social networking site Facebook are doing a lot more than writing on each other’s walls. They’re sharing a ton of Web links, and their friends are following them.
According to SFGate, Compete analytics reporting is showing that 15 percent of traffic in December to big portal sites such as Yahoo and AOL was coming from the social networks Facebook and MySpace. While the two sites were lumped together, the clear winner was Facebook directing 13 percent of the traffic. This topped Google’s meager 7 percent in the same category.
While Google was tops in other categories, Facebook was in second place in just about every category. While there is still a lot of ground to be made up, it shows a definite change in trends for how people are discovering content around the Web. As opposed to the old days when people went out and searched on their own, now they are relying on their friends to point out the best content to them.
Expect to see these numbers continue to creep up over the next few years.
