Yahoo-Microsoft deal a step closer
The proposed search and advertising partnership between Yahoo and Microsoft looks set to get approval from the European Union this week. Though the deal would still need the backing of U.S. regulators, a thumbs up in Europe would remove a major potential stumbling block.
The European Commission (the EU’s administrative wing) is working to a deadline of this Friday to give a verdict. Reuters reports a source as saying officials will give approval, noting that the dominance of Google in the search market means it’s unlikely the partnership could raise serious competition issues.
Under the proposed 10-year deal, Microsoft will pay Yahoo $150 million in “transition costs”, while Yahoo will hand back 12 percent of its advertising revenue during the deal’s life. (That figure may change during the deal if either side exercises particular options.)
The deal also means Bing will provide the search results on both company’s sites. Yahoo will handle premium search-related ads for both companies, Microsoft will handle other sponsored links, and both sides will retain control of their own display ads.
