Google attacks linked to Chinese schools
The New York Times is reporting that officials investigating the recent attacks on Google in China believe they originated in two Chinese educational establishments. But it’s still not known whether the Chinese government played any role.
The schools named by a source are the Lanxiang Vocational School and Shanghai Jiaotong University. The Jiatong link is particularly intriguing as the school hosts a leading computer science class. Of course, that means there are plenty of potential suspects if you take the view that the attacks were the work of an individual student, whether with or without sinister motives.
It doesn’t appear investigators are drawing any firm conclusions from the discovery and it’s possible the attackers may merely have routed their hacking through the schools as a diversion.
There’s no firm evidence to back suspicion that the Chinese government was either directly or indirectly involved in the attacks. That suspicion stems from reports that the attacks were aimed at accessing the Gmail accounts of human rights protesters.
