Twitter ‘Lol’ scam really isn’t funny
Twitter users are currently being plagued by a new scam which is harvesting login details by a link to a fake Twitter page. The messages are all variants on a theme which begin with “Lol” (Internet speak for Laugh Out Loud).
With most of us now well aware of the dangers of email spam and how to avoid becoming a victim, hackers and cyber-criminals are now turning their attention to social networks. They’re used by millions of people on a daily basis, many of whom are young or naive, and are the perfect breeding ground for spamming and scamming.
The latest to hit Twitter is the ‘Lol’ scam, which Twitter itself is now warning users to be on the lookout for.
In general, if you see any msg, DM or no, asking “LOL is this you” or some variant, it’s usually a scam/spam. Be aware of phishing attempts!
Some good, if not a little vague and unimpressive, advice. The essential rule with social networking is to use your common sense. Why would someone you don’t know befriend you? Why would you need to login to your account a second time? Why does that message look too good to be true?
The unfortunate truth is that there are a lot of people out to get you or your details online, and you have to be careful at all times. Sad, I know.
